When you look at Todd Ellenbecker’s resume you wonder how in the world he finds time for all the advising, research, teaching, and studying he does!  How encouraging to see someone so saturated in tennis still have so much enthusiasm for the game and such a drive to spread it to others! When a friend of mine heard I was going to be hosting Fit to Hit, he actually gave me the gift of Todd’s book, “Complete Conditioning for Tennis”.  As an athlete who thinks “Drill, drill, drill,” Todd taught me that doing the same thing over and over again could actually be doing more harm than good.  Learning that an athlete can only peak for 2-3 weeks at the most, makes one realize how important it is to break down our training for an upcoming competition into more manageable, goal specific phases.  This is especially the case for the pros, whose short time off isn’t enough to get them through their never-ending season!   How hard that must be especially during The French Open and Wimbledon, which are not only so close together, but on different surfaces - requiring different demands not only on the body but on technique as well!  But for the rest of us, it’s a lot easier to implement, and if you want to be as prepared as you possibly can for an upcoming tournament, using periodization will make sure you’ve covered all your bases and that you’re at your best!
